To Purge or Not to Purge...To Purge!

As 2009 approaches, I am beginning to think about my New Year's resolution. Parent Bloggers Network is sponsoring a "Get Your Act Together" post contest this weekend asking parent bloggers what they will be doing in 2009 to do just that - get their acts together! So here are my resolutions...dark, dirty, and quite varied.

1. Purge a LOT of stuff that we do not need in our home. Our "stuff" is beginning to weigh my brain and soul down. Much of it is stuff other people could use, so we need to get it IN their hands and OUT of our hands!

2. Play with my dog more. He's cute. He's cuddly. He's annoying and has terrible breath, but I still love him. He tends to get the short end of the stick on a daily basis, so I want to make sure he gets more exercise on a regular basis. This isn't always easy to do when my attention is focused on my daughter, but that's why this is a resolution - because it takes effort!

3. Be more proactive and creative with my daughter's playtime at home. I am a former teacher and definitely have the ability to be doing more learning activities with Gabby at home. I also would like to organize her toys into more spaces in our home than just the living room so that we can "change our environment" during the day just by going upstairs.

4. Give more. Be less self-involved. Sure, we have similar problems to every other family, but in the scheme of life, our "problems" are so minimal. I would love to be one of the first 10 people to post my blog tonight and receive a $25 gift card to Target from BigTent.com. With that money, I am going to buy some Christmas presents for a child in need. My daughter is receiving many wonderful gifts this Christmas and we are so fortunate. Even if I don't win the card, I will still give. My plan for the money just gave my blog post efforts a true "purpose" today and gave me a good feeling about helping others this holiday season.

So what will you be doing to "Get Your Act Together?" Leave me a comment with your plans.

Wow....get my act together? That is a lot to ask :) I am a purger of stuff in our house on a frequent basis (too frequent if you ask my husband) so I stay pretty on top of that. But what I would like to do is find a way to give back to mothers/babies in need. It's tough to give time with 2 young kids but I plan on making blankets and giving them to a local shelter for those moms that need blankets. We are so fortunate that we can just go buy pretty much whatever we need but some folks aren't quite as lucky. I am hoping to help out at least a few moms during this cold time of year :)

If you need to purge some baby stuff my way until you need it again, feel free and we'll return the favor!
We are constantly trying to purge things since our house is so small...usually via the Goodwill route, not sure if that's the best way to help others or not. I guess I feel like it's better than throwing away!

I like #3! When my kiddos were little, we used to go play in the basement while I worked on laundry. The basement was a great place for toddler riding toys, something they really missed in the winter.

Hey, Em! Thanks for the heads up about this contest, but I guess I didn't have my act together to get a post done. :)

I love this list of resolutions- nothing like putting it out there for everyone to see! Luckily I am kind of a freak about things and tend to go through our closets several times a year, but our attic needs a lot of help. Unfortunately it probably won't get done anytime soon, either.

I also love that if you win you are going to use the gift card to buy something for needy kids. While we buy several things off the giving tree at church, I always feel like I could be doing MORE. I think that's my resolution for 2009- to find a way to do MORE. Any ideas?

Great post!
